.Rome, January 20, 2021 – Today is Joe Biden’s day. The inauguration ceremony in Washington will be unprecedented in American history, without an audience and armoured because of the pandemic and security threats, all the more so after the attack on Capitol Hill on January 6th. Along the National Mall, the avenue that runs from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, there are 200,000 American flags to represent the absent public: half of the 400,000 American victims of the pandemic. The ritual invocation will be pronounced by Reverend Leo J. O’Donovan, former president of Georgetown University, while the Pledge of Obligation, the oath of allegiance to the flag and to the United States, will be read by Andrea Hall, the first African-American woman appointed lieutenant of the fire department. The benediction will be given by the Reverend Silvester Beaman of the Episcopal Methodist Church in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden’s confessor for 30 years. After half an hour, at 12 noon on the East Coast, 6 p.m. in Italy, Biden will be sworn in as president before Supreme Court Chief Justice John J. Roberts.
