United States HOME SPEAKER Nancy Pelosi is set to send out the Senate a single short article of impeachment today implicating Donald Trump of prompting the Capitol riot, officially setting off the first-ever impeachment trial of a previous president.
Pelosi, the leading Democrat in Congress, vowed recently that the trial– scheduled to open in the second week of February– need to continue, stating, “I don’t believe it will be long, however we should do it.”
However Republican lawmakers indicated over the weekend that Democrats might have a hard time to protect Trump’s conviction over the storming of United States legal structures earlier this month, which left five people dead.
Senior figures in Trump’s party have pressed back with both political and constitutional arguments, raising doubts that Democrats– who manage 50 seats in the 100- seat chamber– can secure the 17 Republican votes to reach the two-thirds majority needed to convict.
